If you’re in the mood to do something different one of these Friday or Saturday nights, consider taking in some local theater. Essay Fiesta loves Chicago’s vibrant theater community. There’s no shortage of extraordinary talent in this fine city. Here are some of the critics’ picks that we highly recommend (and by critic’s picks we mean Keith cause he’s a critic.)
Scorched at Silk Road Theatre Company
This amazing play is epic in its proportions. Whisking the audience away on a journey that spans two generations and two continents, Scorched has one of the best plots of any drama we’ve ever seen. We highly recommend this production.
State of the Union at Strawdog Theatre
This Pulitzer Prize-winning play written in the 1940s is still as relevant today as ever. Featuring some wonderful acting talent, Strawdog’s production is a snappy, dapper comedy that will sure to captivate anyone who has been glued to election season coverage.
To Kill a Mockingbird at Steppenwolf Theatre
This contemporary classic, which was adapted for the stage about 20 years ago, gets the Steppenwolf treatment. Brilliantly talented child actors fill the main roles in this tale of youth, race and inequality. Although there is some strong language and discussions of sexual assault, the story and its powerful message is appropriate for older children.
