If you didn’t get a chance to read Keith Ecker’s summer reading pick or Alyson Lyon’s summer reading pick, you’re in luck. The duo behind Essay Fiesta have finished their last books and have two more summer reading recommnendations.
Keith’s pick comes straight from the book collection of Essay Fiesta alum Bryan Bowden. After helping him move over the weekend, Keith was awarded a copy of Jeff Griggs’ Guru: My Days with Del Close. The book details Griggs’ awkward but touching relationship with comedy genius Del Close, an early adopter of improv comedy and the founder of the iO Theater. If you like eccentric characters and are interested in learning a bit of Chicago history in the process, this is the book for you.
Alyson’s pick also details the life of a comedian, but this one is written by the jokester herself. It’s Sarah Silverman’s The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption and Pee. Not just a collection of yucks and giggles, Silverman shoots straight from the hip with tales of family and showbiz that are at times both poignant and hilarious. She’s a brave soul, braver than you might think….and funnier than ever. And check out the audiobook, which is read by the comedienne herself.
